The latest book by leading Polish poet Julia Hartwig (born 1921) includes her impressions in miniature note-form and passages from a wide variety of sources, with her personal comments attached. These are the fruits of mature reflection on details drawn from texts she has read, pictures she has seen, and events and scenes she has witnessed. Under this wise woman’s sensitive, and at the same time vigilant eye they gain full power of expression. Here we find great sadness at the transient nature of life, but also a strong desire to believe in its meaning.
