Iwona Chmielewska writes highly original books that have achieved great popularity… in Seoul. She has published five books in South Korea, all of which have had an enthusiastic reception. One of them was named “Best Book of the Year 2004” of translations into Korean, and another qualified for the world final of the Bologna Ragazzi Award, a prize awarded to the best children’s books.
“Roaming at Bedtime” is a fantasy about ten little toes sticking out from under the duvet. In our imagination, the toes change into archipelagos, bridges and piles of sweets… Each double page spread presents a new surreal, poetic image. The text is sparse and simple, and the illustrations are collages made of paper napkins, wallpaper, dried leaves and old prints. The strength of the book lies in broadening the child’s imagination and encouraging it to fantasise, because all children have a book of their own in their heads, which just hasn’t been written down yet. And a child’s thoughts at bedtime are the start of a poetic journey.
